A Doula’s Top Piece of Advice for Expecting Parents
As doulas, we get asked a lot of questions. We’re often seen as the gatekeepers of "labor hacks" and the curators of the ultimate "must-have" baby gear lists. But recently, a client asked us something that stopped us in our tracks:
“Since you see this every day... what’s the ONE piece of advice you can give me?”
We could see it in their eyes. They were waiting for a secret technique to shorten transition or a hidden tip for getting a newborn to sleep through the night. Instead, we realized that all the professional training in the world doesn’t compare to one simple, honest truth.
We looked at them and said: “You are going to do a great job. All you can do is the best you can, and that is exactly what your baby needs.”
The Trap of "Optimizing" Parenthood
In the age of social media and endless "how-to" guides, there is an immense pressure on parents to optimize every single moment. We are told we need the perfect birth plan, the perfect nursery, and the perfect developmental activities from day one.
In planning for the "perfect" scenario, what often gets lost is trusting the person at the center of it all: You.
As doulas, we spend a lot of time teaching the "how-to" of labor and newborn care. But the longer we do this work, the more we realize that the most important lesson isn’t a technique, it’s the "you’ve got this."
Why Your Best is Exactly What Your Baby Needs
It’s easy to get caught up in the "shoulds" and "what-ifs."
Should I be doing more sensory play?
What if my birth plan changes?
Should I have bought that expensive smart bassinet?
Here is the truth: Your baby doesn't need a "perfect" parent. They need their parent. They need the person who shows up, even when they’re tired, and does their best with the tools they have in that moment.
A Permission Slip to Breathe
If you are currently scrolling through your feed feeling overwhelmed by the weight of expectations, let this be your permission to take a deep breath.
There is no secret hack. There is just you, doing your best for yourself and your baby.
"The most beautiful thing about your journey isn't how closely you followed a plan—it's how you showed up for yourself and your child."
We’re in Your Corner
Whether you are preparing for your first birth or navigating the hazy days of the fourth trimester, remember that you don't have to do it alone, and you certainly don't have to do it perfectly.
At the end of the day, your intuition and your effort are more than enough. You’ve got this (and we’re always in your corner). 🤍
